Nosanchuk began making furniture in the early 90’s during his Master Program at SCI-ARC. These early explorations focused on remaking historic works such as Shaker, Arts and Crafts and the new Modernism pieces.
Starting his own studio, this first collection of furniture “Sharp + Heavy Line,” was a response to the thin, soft and even frail furnishings that were coming up in the late 90’s. This collection, first exhibited at ICFF in 2000 and voted one of “Best in Show” included both wood and bronze pieces. The concept meant to produce pieces that were visually and physically enduring reinterpreting earlier mid-century and deco furniture and reconnecting the relationship between the two dimensional line and the three dimensional form.
Both the wood and metal pieces were considered “extrusion” frames that could be elongated or shorted to create other pieces for the collection. The framework for the wood side chair could be stretched to become a loveseat or buffet or shrunk to become a side table, all with solid mahogany frames stained to match various matched veneer inserts such as figured black walnut, rosewood and emberwood.
